In China, McDonald’s has its own cafe area with espresso machines and comfy seats.
I was impressed with my cappuccino. And +1 for their prices which are 1/2 the price of Starbucks in China.

Chinese birthday cakes are so pretty. And light/airy, with their whipped cream and fruit topping instead of butter-based icing.

月饼 (mooncake - a Chinese pastry with a rich lotus seed filling and salted duck eggyolk) and 老婆饼 (“wife” or sweetheart cake - a flaky pastry with a winter melon, almond, and sesame filling).
Who cares if they’re probably made with lard and 1,000+ calories apiece…

Bowl of deliciousness from Gulangyu Island, Xiamen - Coconut milk, red beans, mung beans, barley, peanuts, mochi chunks, and a kind of herbal grass jelly called Shao Xian Cao (烧仙草).

Mild - medium - spicy.

The beautiful color gradient of beef noodle soup from Kangshifu Noodle Restaurant in China. Missing their chewy noodles with huge chunks of soft, juicy slow-cooked beef right now…

So beautiful. Shaved ice masterpieces found on Xiamen’s Gulangyu Island.

Top: Mango shaved ice with real, juicy mango chunks, ice cream, and condensed milk.

Bottom: Matcha green tea shaved ice drizzled all over with red beans and condensed milk, decorated with Madeleine cookies.

Best fast food combo to get at Zhen Kung-fu in China - flavorful braised fatty pork and pickled vegetables over steamed rice, with veggies and soup on the side.

If you’re like me and sometimes have random dim sum cravings….then you’ll understand (hopefully) our group’s crazy decision to go to a famous 24-hour dim sum place in Beijing called Jin Ding Xuan 金鼎轩 at 2:00 AM in the morning. And it was glorious.

Just look at that line of assorted dim sum, as far as the eye can see…And food just tastes so much better at 2:00 AM.

I’m a HUGE fan of the Veggie Grill now - perfect for a healthy, power-boosting workday lunch. They don’t just serve good vegetarian food - it’s actually great-tasting food! Their chicken wraps are amazing, and I’ve ordered their Quinoa Power Salad (above) twice now - that’s Quinoa, kale, avocado, fennel, cannellini beans, almonds, and currants, with a refreshing mint and citrus dressing.

Thai Tom (in U-District) always has a HUGE line extending down the street during lunch & dinner, so I knew I had to try it sometime.

It’s a very crowded, dingy little restaurant with a few small tables squished against the wall plus a row of bar stools for seats. There was only one chef who churned out orders as fast as he could behind the counter, but my food still took ages to arrive. I ordered the pad see ew (below), and took a pic of someone’s pad thai (top). The portions were generous but the quality didn’t quite live up to my expectations. It was much greasier than the noodles at other Thai places and lacked variety in their vegetables/add-ins.

Yeti Yogurt in U-District - not a great picture, but can we just appreciate for a moment how many toppings they have??? 50+ and some aren’t even pictured! They’re also known for their innovative fro-yo flavors like Red Bull or Black Cherry Greek yogurt.

Have you ever struggled when ordering brunch because you can’t decide between sweet (pancakes, waffles, french toast) and savory (omelettes, eggs + sausage)? This plate brought together the best of both worlds - gooey, melted ham eggs & cheese, sandwiched between two thick, fluffy slices of French toast, and drizzled all over with maple syrup and powdered sugar. Mmm. So much for this week’s workout.

It’s been a while, but I’m back with more mouthwatering posts!!
The “Salty Pimp” from the Big Gay Ice Cream shop, unique to NYC. The friend who took the photo said he waited 30 min for one…Apparently, the ice cream doesn’t taste all that different from your average cone, but the way they make it is just so much fun/original.
